Josep Oriol Mestres

Barcelona, 1815 – 1895

Born into a family of architects, he studied at the Barcelona Llotja and moved to Madrid in 1841 to complete his studies at the San Fernando School of Architecture.

Highlights of his work include:

1861: First building of the Eixample new area of Barcelona, Casa Gibert.

1848: Collaboration with Miquel Garriga Roca on the Gran Teatre del Liceu. After the 1861 fire he was also in charge of its reconstruction.

1884: Monument to Antonio López y López.

1855: Appointed architect of the Cathedral of Barcelona.

He became a Fellow of the Sant Jordi Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts and founded the first Society of Nativity scene makers of Barcelona

Josep M. Sagnier Vidal

Barcelona, 1890 – 1978

Son of the great architect Enric Sagnier Villavecchia, he was the second Marquis of Sagnier and an architect, like his father, with whom he collaborated during the initial years of his profession.

He earned his degree in 1916 and was a diocesan architect for the Barcelona bishopric.

Highlights of his work include:

1902-1961: Completion of the work begun by his father on the Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart on the Tibidabo mountain, Barcelona.

1912-1927: French Chapel on Bruc street, Barcelona.

1915-1931: Church of Sant Josep Oriol on Diputació street, Barcelona.

1932: Side façade of the General Tobacco Company of the Philippines, Barcelona.

1946-1970: Windsor Palace cinema. Barcelona.

1951: Extensions to La Rotonda, Hotel Metropolitan, Barcelona

1952: Hotel Avenida Palace, Barcelona.
